Hooded Scarf with Pockets
the same style as in your photo/schematic. It’s a modular build: crochet the long scarf (A), crochet the hood panel (B), seam the hood at the center, then fold the scarf ends up to form pockets. The texture is chunky and warm, perfect for quick gift-making.
This project is deliberately flexible. I give child/teen/adult measurements plus a “make-to-measure” option so you can customize without worry. The main fabric uses the Moss (Granite) Stitch for that nubby, hand-knit look and the bands use easy ribbing for stretch and polish. If you prefer an even puffier texture, you can swap the main stitch to herringbone hdc—sizes don’t change.
Because everything is made from rectangles, this is a confidence-building piece for newer crocheters and a relaxing “TV project” for experts. The hood is a single panel folded in half—no shaping—then seamed up the back. Add optional bear ears and buttons to match the inspiration.
Work it in a neutral for everyday wear or in playful colors for kids. A super-bulky yarn makes the texture pop and keeps little ears toasty. Let’s make it!
Materials
- Super bulky yarn (#6) or chunky T-shirt yarn
- Child: 400–500 g • Teen: 550–650 g • Adult: 650–800 g
- Hook: 9.0 mm (M/N-13) for body; 8.0 mm for ribbing (adjust to gauge)
- 2 large buttons (optional for pocket tabs)
- Tapestry needle, markers, scissors
Gauge (moss stitch): ~8–9 sts × 12 rows = 4″/10 cm.
(Adjust hook so fabric is dense but flexible.)
Abbreviations (US): ch = chain • sc = single crochet • sl st = slip stitch • st(s) = stitch(es) • sk = skip • rep = repeat • BLO = back loop only • pm = place marker.
Finished Measurements (choose one)
- Child (5–9 yrs): A = 55″ × 9″ (140 × 23 cm) • B = 23″ × 11″ (58 × 28 cm)
- Teen/Small Adult: A = 63″ × 9.5″ (160 × 24 cm) • B = 24″ × 11″ (61 × 28 cm)
- Adult M/L: A = 70″ × 10.5″ (178 × 27 cm) • B = 25–26″ × 12″ (64–66 × 30 cm)
Make-to-measure: For A, length = arm-span from fingertip to fingertip minus ~8″/20 cm (pockets eat length). Width = 9–11″ / 23–28 cm. For B, width ≈ scarf width + 1–2″ (2.5–5 cm), height ≈ 11–12″ (28–30 cm).
Pattern
Stitch Patterns
Moss Stitch (worked flat):
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch1, sk1, sc in next; end sc.
Row 2: ch1, turn, sc in first sc, ch1, sc in next ch-1 sp; end sc in last sc.
Rep Row 2.
Simple Rib (BLO sc):
Row: ch1, turn, sc BLO across.
Part A – Scarf with Ribbed Bands (make 1)
- Ribbed band #1 (short end):
With smaller hook, ch 8–10 (for a 1.75–2.25″ band). Row 1: sc in 2nd ch and across.
Rows 2–(rows to length): ch1, turn, sc BLO across.
Work until the rib measures the scarf width (see size). Do not fasten off. - Pick up long edge for body (switch to 9 mm):
Rotate the rib so long edge faces up; work 1 sc per rib row to pick up the foundation width.
Foundation row count guide: Child 23–25 sts • Teen 25–27 • Adult 27–29 (exact count not critical; keep it odd so moss stitch begins/ends with sc). - Body in Moss Stitch:
Work moss stitch rows until the piece measures the target length minus the second rib depth and minus pocket fold (fold is 7–8″ / 18–20 cm per pocket). See “Assembly” note for pocket fold. - Ribbed band #2:
Switch to smaller hook. Work BLO sc across for 8–10 rows to match first band. Fasten off, weave ends.
Part B – Hood Panel (make 1)
- With 9 mm, ch to match B width (see size). Work moss stitch for B height.
- Front edge rib: Switch to 8 mm. Along one long edge, work BLO sc for 5–6 rows to form a soft forehead band (like the sketch). Fasten off.
Optional – Bear Ears (make 2)
- Round ear: MR, 6 sc. R2: 2 sc in each (12). R3: (sc, inc) around (18). R4: (2 sc, inc) around (24). Flatten to a semicircle. Leave a long tail.
- Sew ears to the top corners after the hood is attached.
Assembly
- Find center of scarf: Fold scarf A in half; pm the center.
- Attach hood B: Center the non-ribbed long edge of B along the scarf centerline, spanning B width. With tapestry needle and yarn, whipstitch the hood edge to the scarf.
- Form hood: Fold B right sides together and seam the short back edge to the top to create the hood “peak.” Turn right side out.
- Pockets: From each scarf end, fold up 7–8″ (18–20 cm) to the front. Seam up the left and right sides of each fold to make pockets. Add a button through the pocket corner if desired.
- Edge clean-up: Work one round/row of sc evenly around the entire outer silhouette (front hood edge down one scarf side, across bottom, up the other side, and around the hood opening), placing 3 sc at outside corners for a smooth outline. Optional final round: reverse sc (crab stitch) for a corded edge.
Fit & Finishing
- Try on; if the hood feels shallow, add 2–3 more rows to B before seaming.
- Steam-block lightly or wash & dry flat to relax the texture.
- For extra warmth, line the hood with fleece (hand-stitch to the wrong side along the rib seam).
- Add handwarmer pockets by stitching a little channel inside each pocket for a heat pack.
Quick Size Recap
- Child: A 55″ × 9″ • Fold 7″ pockets • B 23″ × 11″
- Teen: A 63″ × 9.5″ • Fold 7.5″ pockets • B 24″ × 11″
- Adult: A 70″ × 10.5″ • Fold 8″ pockets • B 25–26″ × 12″
